Makindu Friend’s Women’s Group (MFWG) is an aspiring assembly of 37 Kenyan women from all walks of life. These women want the opportunity to provide a better future for themselves, their families and community. Located in the town of Makindu on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, MFWG is working hard to turn a 10 acre parcel of land in to a thriving centre where sustainable farming, fishing and poultry will provide the basic necessities to care for their families and the local orphans.
But even fertile land cannot move forward until there is access to water. The area hasn’t seen sufficient rainfall since El Nino in 1998 and the construction of a well can be costly. This is the very short description of the project but take faith in knowing that all proper measures have been taken to make this venture very successful. I have personally met the women of this group and their grace and humble attitude has inspired me to help them get started. They have the energy and spirit to follow through and want to be able to help more women like them across Kenya. This is truly a story about creating a ripple effect. Since the birth of my daughter Fern this past April my new motherhood has inspired me even more to help my international community.
To help raise the $14,000 needed VODA has created an exciting partnership with Organics 4 Orphans (O4O), a registered Canadian charity, who has agreed to front half the cost for the well. O4O will also be providing free agricultural training. But we need your help to raise $7,000 to make this well a reality.

There is a sense of urgency to get this project underway; with lack of water to grow food the women will continue to struggle to provide the basic rights for their children.
